Description
The Tower Crane Mast Section (or simply Mast Section) is a fundamental modular steel component that forms the vertical structure of a tower crane. It serves as the backbone of the entire system, providing the height, strength, and stability that enable the crane to operate safely and efficiently.
As the central framework, the mast section supports all other parts of the tower crane and ensures reliable performance throughout every lifting operation.
Core Functions
1. Vertical Support and Height Adjustment
The mast section determines the crane’s operating height. By adding or removing sections, operators can easily adjust the crane to match the building’s progress—a process known as climbing or jacking. This modular flexibility allows the crane to grow together with the project.
2. Load Bearing
The mast section carries the entire weight of the upper structure, including the jib, counter-jib, slewing unit, operator’s cab, and counterweights. It also resists wind and operational loads, safely transferring them down to the base. Because of this role, it must maintain exceptional strength and fatigue resistance under varying conditions.
3. Structural Stability
By maintaining vertical rigidity during lifting, slewing, and luffing movements, the mast section keeps the entire crane stable. Its lattice design distributes stress evenly and prevents structural deformation during heavy operations.
Standard Structure and Design
A standard mast section combines maximum strength with optimized weight, ensuring both safety and cost-efficiency.
| Component | Description |
|---|---|
| Main Chords (Legs) | Four vertical members—made of angle steel or steel pipes—that bear compression and tension forces. |
| Web Members (Lattice) | Diagonal and horizontal bracings welded between the main chords to reinforce rigidity and resist shear forces. |
| Connection Points | Precision-drilled steel plates or lugs at each end, used to connect sections securely with high-tensile bolts (e.g., M24, M30). |
| Ladder and Platforms | Built-in ladders and rest platforms inside the mast allow safe access for maintenance personnel. |
Common Specifications
Most modern mast sections feature a square cross-section, providing balanced stress distribution and simplified installation.
Standard modular sizes include 1.2 × 1.2 m, 1.6 × 1.6 m, and 2.0 × 2.0 m widths, with an average length of about 3 meters per section.
This modularity ensures compatibility across multiple crane types and makes transportation and assembly more convenient.
